Depression is characterized by an acute or chronic low mood. Depression can range from an acute episode of a severe low mood to a chronic low mood on most days. Regardless of the severity or duration of the low mood, common symptoms of depression include the following:

  • Depressed mood

  • Lack of interest in pleasurable activities

  • Weight loss when not dieting or weight gain

  • Difficulty sleeping, excessive sleeping, or insomnia

  • Low energy or fatigue

  • Feelings of worthlessness

  • Difficulty concentrating
