Substance abuse is characterized as substance use that results in failure to perform major obligations at work, school or home. Signs of substance abuse are repeated work absence, poor work performance, suspensions or expulsions from school, relationship conflicts, or neglect of children or the household.

Substances that are commonly abused are alcohol, amphetamines, sedatives, caffeine, marijuana, cocaine, hallucinogens, inhalants, nicotine, opioids and phencyclidine (PCP). Prescribed medications and over the counter medications can also be abused, resulting in problems at work, school or home.
