There a several types of Anxiety Disorders, each having unique characteristics. Some common types of Anxiety Disorders are Generalized Anxiety Disorder, Panic Attack, Agoraphobia, Social Phobia and Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. Generalized Anxiety Disorder is the most common type.

  • Generalized Anxiety Disorder is excessive anxiety and worry occurring about a variety of events or activities. The person finds it difficult to control the worry.
  • A Panic Attack is a discrete period of intense fear or discomfort that is accompanied by physical and emotional symptoms.
  • Agoraphobia is a specific type of Anxiety Disorder characterized by fear of being in places or situations from which escape might be difficult.
  • Social Phobia is a significant and persistent fear of social or performance situations where one is exposed to unfamiliar people or to possible scrutiny by others. The person fears that he or she will act in a way that will be humiliating or embarrassing.
  • Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD) is characterized by obsessions and/or compulsions. Obsessions are recurrent and persistent thoughts, impulses, or images. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental acts (such as counting) that a person feels driven to perform.
